What woodworkers say

★★★★★

"Besides taking and holding an extremely sharp edge, the MagnaCut chips significantly less than the factory A2 blade. The MagnaCut edge lasts at least 3 times longer than the A2 in the hard and abrasive woods that I use."

Brian L. · #51 shooting plane · verified buyer

★★★★★

"I have 4 different plane irons from Lake Erie Toolworks and they are fantastic. Every time I get a new favorite antique plane that I realize I will be using a lot, I will try to find a MagnaCut plane iron. It just bring[s] the modern performance to an 100+ year old tool immediately."

Frank Z. · vintage bench planes · verified buyer

★★★★★

"The best. Nothing else is close. They take a little more work to sharpen but they stay sharp waaaaaaaay longer. I have switched all of my heavy use planes over and am really happy with that decision."

Sharp enough to smooth, 2½ times longer

Most blades lose their keen edge fast, then hang on semi-dull. MagnaCut wears down slowly and steadily.

At 160 strokes, the others are too dull to smooth. MagnaCut is still sharp enough to smooth. Cuts every hair Cuts most hair Too dull for fine smoothing 0 80 160 240 320 400 Plane strokes MagnaCut PM-V11 A2 O1

“Not only did it outperform all other steels pretty much across the board, it did it very, very obviously.”

Questions

Is MagnaCut harder to sharpen?

Yes, if you're not set up for it. MagnaCut's edge life comes from very hard vanadium and niobium carbides, which ordinary aluminum oxide stones struggle with. Diamond plates, diamond lapping film or CBN work best. Each sharpening takes a little longer, but you'll do it far less often.

How long until it ships?

I make blades in small production runs. If yours is on the shelf, it ships right away. If not, you can reserve one from the next run; your payment holds your place, and each blade's page shows the expected ship time before you order.

Will it fit my plane?

How does MagnaCut compare?

How long a blade stays sharp comes down to two things working together:

  • Wear resistance: how slowly the edge is rubbed away by abrasion. It’s commonly measured by machine (the CATRA test), cutting card stock loaded with abrasive. That measures abrasion only, not the impact and prying forces of real planing.
  • Toughness: how well the edge resists chipping, from the microchipping that dulls a keen edge long before it wears away to the larger chips knots, very hard woods and end grain can cause.

A brittle steel can score well in the abrasion test and still lose its keen edge quickly in hardwood or end grain. MagnaCut has high wear resistance and high toughness, so it holds a keen edge in real work.

  • vs. PM-V11: PM-V11 scores well on abrasion tests, slightly higher than MagnaCut, and it sharpens on conventional abrasives. MagnaCut is significantly tougher, though. In real planing that toughness keeps the edge from microchipping, so MagnaCut stays keen longer, especially in dense hardwoods and end grain.
  • vs. A2: MagnaCut is both more wear resistant and tougher. One customer reported my blade lasting about 3 times longer than his A2 iron.
  • vs. O1: O1 is easy to sharpen, but MagnaCut is significantly more wear resistant and tougher.
  • vs. AEB-L: AEB-L is tough, takes a keen edge and sharpens faster than MagnaCut (though not as fast as O1), but its low wear resistance means sharpening significantly more often. MagnaCut holds its edge much longer.
  • vs. M2: M2 is a high-speed steel (it resists softening at high temperatures, which suits it to lathe turning tools) with good abrasion resistance and reasonable toughness. MagnaCut is both tougher and more abrasion resistant, so it holds a keener edge longer.

Every blade is double tempered and cryogenically treated to Rockwell C 62. MagnaCut is also highly corrosion resistant, so a keen edge stays keen in a humid shop or between uses. If it doesn't stay sharper, longer than the blade you have now, the Edge Promise gets you a full refund.

What if it doesn't hold up?

That's covered by the Edge Promise: if your blade doesn't stay sharper, longer than the one it replaced, send it back within a year for a full refund. Return shipping is included for US customers.
