Questions

Is MagnaCut harder to sharpen?

A little. MagnaCut gets its edge life from very hard vanadium and niobium carbides, and ordinary aluminum oxide stones cut those slowly. Diamond plates or CBN work best. Some customers do their initial honing on water stones like Shapton or Naniwa Chosera and finish with diamond or a strop. You'll sharpen it less often, which is the point.

How long until it ships?

We make blades in small production runs. If yours is on the shelf, it ships right away. If not, you can reserve one from the next run; your payment holds your place, and each blade's page shows the expected ship time before you order.

Why MagnaCut instead of PM-V11, A2 or O1?

How long a blade stays sharp depends on two things: wear resistance (how slowly the edge rubs away) and toughness (whether the fine edge chips and crumbles). Most steels are good at one or the other. MagnaCut is good at both.

PM-V11 has wear resistance in a similar range, but MagnaCut is significantly tougher. That difference shows up in testing: the fine edge on other blades breaks down early, and they go on cutting with a semi-dull edge. MagnaCut holds its keen edge, so you keep getting clean shavings in end grain and hard, figured woods long after other blades have dropped to "good enough."

A2 and O1 wear faster, and A2 is prone to chipping. One customer reported our blade lasting about 3 times longer than his A2 iron.

Every blade is double tempered and cryogenically treated to Rockwell C 62, and MagnaCut is highly rust resistant, so a damp shop is far less of a worry. If it doesn't stay sharper, longer than the blade you have now, the Edge Promise gets you a full refund.
